Greatham Beck Local Nature Reserve
One of Hartlepool’s best-kept secrets is the lovely, one hectare wildlife corridor that runs along the western edge of the Fens Estate. Rich in plant-life and fringed with deciduous woodland, it provides a rich and varied habitat for many species including kingfisher, water vole, woodpecker and owl.
The reserve provides a variety of features along the length of the beck - shingle beds, sandy banks, and heavily vegetated earth banks. This supports cow parsley, garlic mustard and herb robert plant species. This together with the deciduous woodland supports a variety of woodland and farmland birds including Woodpeckers and Sparrowhawks. Small mammals include the Common Shrew, the Water Shrew, Field Mouse and Vole, Hedgehogs and Weasels.
From Catcote Road, turn into Mowbray Road then Spalding Road to join Newark Road. Limited on-road parking is available.
